Engineering “smarter” cells, with Tim Lu
Traditional cell therapies rely on “clean targets” – antigens that are found on cancer cells but not on healthy cells. Where these targets can’t be found, it’s difficult to build a therapy that will deliver kill cancer cells without being too dangerous to other cells.
Senti Bio is developing a solution to this problem: “logic-gated” cells which have multiple receptors allowing them to attack cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone, even without a clean target.
In San Francisco this month during JPM, editor-in-chief Jonah Comstock caught up with Senti Bio CEO Tim Lu to discuss this new approach to cell therapy, how it works, and the possibilities it opens up.
They also discussed the current evolution of cell therapy, both in terms of novel therapies and in terms of solidifying infrastructure, and talked about the tension of those two growth trajectories - and what the path forward looks like for innovative cell therapy companies.
