Digital
Interview from BIO 2025 with Iya Khalil

It BIO 2025 back in June, AI was a major topic of discussion. But there was a concerted effort to make sure the conversation went beyond hype and surface-level promises to concrete discussion about how to use specific AI tools effectively.

In this post-BIO virtual interview, editor-in-chief Jonah Comstock speaks with Iya Khalil, VP and head of data, AI, and genome sciences at Merck & Co (MSD in Europe) about how that idea presents itself in her work. She discusses Merck's foundational AI drug discovery model TEDDY (Transformers for Enabling Drug DiscoverY).

Some of the topics addressed in the interview include:

  • Using AI thoughtfully in the areas where it’s the most useful in drug discovery and development.
  • Using the right AI model for the right use case, with the right support team.
  • How Merck leverages human intelligence and artificial intelligence together
  • Using AI to increase efficiencies (clinical trials), as well as to help solve difficult scientific problems
