Digital health company Liva Healthcare has acquired UK-based Momenta, a provider of digital, virtual, and in-person healthy lifestyle programmes, for an undisclosed sum.
At the same time, the Copenhagen and London-based company has raised additional financing that will be used to accelerate its growth and international expansion, led by Danish investment company IBL Group.
The amount of funding – which is backed by existing investors MIG, Santos, Maj Invest, and other private investors – is also not being revealed.
Liva offers app-based, one-on-one, healthy lifestyle coaching programmes to help people better manage their weight and lifestyle-related chronic conditions, like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and its platform is already being used by the NHS in England after being backed by health technology assessment organisation NICE.
Momenta operates in the same area, providing programmes to the NHS, local authorities, and other organisations in the UK. Its range of behavioural intervention programmes covers cardiovascular disease prevention, management of diabetes, help losing weight, smoking cessation, healthy eating, and exercise referral.
The acquisition by Liva includes Momenta Newcastle, which delivers the programmes developed by Discover Momenta.
Liva – which already operates in several European markets including the UK, Germany, Denmark, Spain, and Sweden, as well as in Asia-Pacific countries, said in a statement that the acquisition will increase its reach.
It has a partnership with UK retail pharmacy chain Boots to provide weight management programmes to patients who use Boots Online Doctor, a telehealth service that provides online consultations and medicine prescriptions, as well as at-home test kits, covering dozens of common healthcare conditions.
That includes patients who access GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Eli Lilly's Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Novo Nordisk's Wegovy (semaglutide) on prescription via Boots' Online Doctor. Liva provides the weight loss/healthy lifestyle coaching elements of the service.
It is also part of a consortium of EU bodies, led by pharma group Amgen, that developed a digital cardiac rehabilitation programme called Rehab+.
Liva chief executive Shahram Sharif said the acquisition "marks a step-change in Liva's ambitions, as we embark on a revamped strategic growth plan to help more people prevent, manage, and reverse their chronic conditions" and "cements Liva's position as one of the largest providers of such services to the NHS in England."
