ISMAI 2026: Florence to host international symposium on the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence in medicine

On 3 and 4 December, in the CTO Auditorium of Careggi University Hospital, clinicians, scientists and international experts will discuss clinical judgement, patient safety and professional accountability. The symposium is accredited for 12 CME/CPD credits by EACCME® (UEMS).

Florence, 11 September 2026 – On 3 and 4 December 2026, Florence will host ISMAI 2026, the International Symposium on Medical AI, organised by the International Society of Medical AI (ISMAI), a clinician-led, non-profit and independent scientific society. The symposium will be held in the CTO Auditorium of Careggi University Hospital, under the theme “The Renaissance of Clinical Intelligence”.

ISMAI 2026 will bring together clinicians, scientists, ethicists, regulatory experts and patient representatives from a range of countries to examine how artificial intelligence can be integrated into medical practice while keeping clinical judgement, patient safety and professional accountability at its core.

Conceived as an independent, non-commercial scientific forum, the symposium shifts the focus from the capabilities of the technology alone to the conditions required for its responsible use in clinical practice, with particular attention to what professionals and institutions need to understand, verify and govern before and during the adoption of artificial intelligence systems.

The programme will address the foundations of artificial intelligence in medicine and its use across the patient care pathway, alongside questions of scientific evidence, validation and safety. It will also explore the philosophical and ethical implications, governance models for healthcare organisations, and the training required for professionals tasked with using and supervising these systems.

The international faculty includes, among others, Edward H. Shortliffe (Columbia University) and Vimla L. Patel (Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medical College), alongside speakers from universities and institutions in a number of countries.
The symposium is accredited for 12 CME/CPD credits through EACCME® (UEMS). Registration is open online, with a reduced rate available for students.

Full programme and registration: florence.ismai.org. The call for abstracts is open until 8 November 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Rome).”
