Pharmaceutical company Merck &amp, Co. announced yesterday that it is to close its MSD manufacturing facility in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, a decision which will see the loss of more than 12 per cent of its Irish workforce.

The move, which will affect 280 jobs, is part of Merck’s ongoing review of its worldwide manufacturing capabilities.

“Rathdrum has been a significant manufacturing site since 1961 and has a long history of operational excellence. The proposal to cease operations is not a reflection of the site’s performance or the highly skilled people working there.”

John Smith, MSD site director

Manufacturing activities will begin to be phased out in 2014, however, Merck did reassure that no job losses were expected before the end of next year.
