Lonza job cut to begin next month

News

Swiss contract research organization Lonza is to begin to slash two-thirds of its 300-person workforce in Hopkinton next month. The company had previously announced that it was going to phase out work at the Hopkinton site but hadn't put a timeframe to it.

The company now says it will cut 100 positions in September and another 100 by the end of the year, according to The Boston Globe.

Speaking to the Globe, spokeswoman for the company, Melanie Disa, said "it is part of an overall reorganization that Lonza is doing. Operations (in Hopkinton) are continuing for the foreseeable future."

Falling earnings and higher raw material costs prompted the restructuring, which will see some of the manufacturing being transferred to Switzerland.
